Uncrating the New WM Boiler

The new WM Cgi 4 was just taken off the truck.  The package (crate) was removed and it was checked for any visible damage. So far so good!
WM Cgi-4 Series 4
It doesn't look very big, but this baby weighs 245 lbs!

The Hydrostatic Pressure Test

Here's something that you don't usually see (if at all) on any videos of installs.  Of course, all installers perform this test, they just don't want to "waste your time" by videoing it!  Some might say...they just trust the company that manufactures the boiler to send them a leak proof product.

Checkin' 4 Leaks...

"You BS your friends and I'll BS mine, but let's not BS each other!"
Why do you suppose they put it in the Boiler Manual?  One might think that this line is just a CYA legal clause, and perhaps it is.  But I cannot imagine going through the process of a boiler installation (additional items not mentioned in this article) only to have to dismantle the whole system because I was unlucky enough to get a boiler with a defect or crack in it--and worse, I didn't take the time to make an important test on the boiler!

Even if the boiler left the factory in perfect condition, can you imagine how many hands and machines touched this thing
(cast iron and sensitive electronics!!) in the process of transferring the boiler to you?  This applies to any brand boiler.
From the WM Boiler Manual:
"Pressure test boiler before attaching water or gas piping (except as noted below) or electrical supply."
OOPS!
After removing all the plastic and other wrappings, its time for a closer look to see if there is any obvious damage caused by shipping, improper packaging, or just overt manufacturing defects. The instructions state to inspect the orifices and burners. i.e., check for the correctly sized manifold orifices.
There appears to be a conflict about spud size for the CGi 4 series 4 (I think it is a typo) on Table 2 on page 12 of the Boiler Manual and Figure 40, page 64. I believe the Figure 40 info for the CGi 4 is correct. [call the manufacturer for verification]
The orifice size is stamped on the spud barrel--you will have to get out the Magoo's (or loupes if you have them) to try to see it.  I used a small inspection mirror and a flashlight to read the numbers, but the numbers are tiny and may be upside down depending on your viewing point.) The brass is easily scratched, so I hope one of the weightlifter assemblers didn't blur your numbers!
WARNING :This article is for educational purposes; I am just relating my personal experiences.  I believe the information given to be accurate, but should not be used as an instructional manual.  You should follow the manufacturer's directions and comply with all local codes. Your level of expertise and educational credentials/certifications may vary. When you are not confident, why not let a professional HVAC person do the installation?
