Computer Cameras:
Who is watching YOU?
People have talked about Big Brother watching for years. There are cameras monitoring people in stores, in many office buildings and on the highway. Most people are used to video camera monitoring, and some say it gives them a feeling of security. But sometimes it can get creepy.
Cameras on computers are a valuable asset in communicating, but if misused can cause problems for children and their parents. Some children now attend a cyber school instead of their brick and mortar traditional school. Each school works a little differently, but basically the child stays at home and gets his/her lessons over a school issued laptop computer. The laptop may be in the living room, bedroom study area, or just about any area where convenient.
In one instance, a school had webcams (in the laptops) that the school administrators could activate covertly. The issue became known when a child was disciplined for "improper behavior in his home," and the vice principal supposedly used a photo taken by the webcam as evidence.
Maybe that SkyNet idea isn't that far off.

As technology progresses, some people are using devices to check on their house and/or occupants. Is this a good thing or will it go the way of SkyNet? People set up their computer camera to see what is happening while they are away. Some have been using their digital/camcorders to do this for years without the computer.
Some even connect a series of cameras to the computer to help get a better view. A person could watch their house while they are working miles away. This could alert them to a fire or a burglary; the things some people pay a security/alarm firm to do. Parents could actually monitor their children and/or the human babysitter to some degree.

Using a camera and computer to monitor your house while away
In my article, Are Computers the New Generation Parents?, I wrote about the use of the computer at home as a nanny or cyber nanny sitter, meaning something to occupy the child. I brought up SkyNet from the Terminator movies and recalled how it took over the planet through computers. It started out as a good thing, but ended in disaster.
