Buy the best cat food for your cat(s) that you can afford
It is important to slowly transition your pet from his/her current diet as it takes a few days for the body to adapt to the new nutrient levels. To transition, gradually mix in the new cat food with the present food over a 5-7 day period, increasing the amount of the new cat food each day (decreasing the amount of the present food), so that you are feeding 100% of the new cat food by day 7.

Don't substitute dry dog food for your cat food. Dog food does not contain enough protein for a cat diet, and a cat needs taurine in his/her diet.
If you trusted the TV ads, buying food for your cat would be so easy. The commericals help sell products with clever ads and packaging, photos and videos of healthy cats running all over the place.
Unfortunately, unless the ad is for an expensive cat food, the ingredients aren't always mentioned. You see the bright colored shaped bits--but that is for you--the human, so you make the purchase. I doubt the cat cares about the color or shape of the bits!
The bottom line is cheaper pet foods have more fillers and less protein. Cats are Obligate Carnivores and require a high protein diet! Note: Some cats require special diets so check with your veterinarian since s/he will be familiar with any medical concerns of your cat. Also, if you have a kitten, you need to buy kitten food instead of adult cat food.
When buying any cat food--check the expiration date and look for the Association of American Feed Control (AAFCO) label.
Why are some cat foods more expensive?

Protein costs more than grain for the pet food manufacturer. So you can expect to pay more for a higher quality cat food.
The order of ingredients listed on the cat food package is just as important as the kind of ingredients. (see AAFCO) The first few ingredients listed on the label are the important ones to consider when buying cat food. Look for more meat (chicken, turkey, lamb, or beef--not just "meat") and less grain in the top few ingredients. Many low cost grocery store dry cat food brands use carbohydrates as fillers: cornmeal, ground corn, corn gluten, maize,...
Sometimes the discount online is as good as or better than a coupon.

Maybe you don't want to change brands, but just compare prices to your local store!
If you compare prices, you may find that you can get a better quality cat food for just a bit more than you are paying at your local store. (+75¢ a lb. for some--you decide) Your cat may eat less of the higher quality cat food because of the nutrients. But even a cheaper brand cat food is better than no food at all! For those who are feeding feral or other less fortunate cats, at least it is some food. The cat will need to eat more to try to get nutrients, and pay attention to the section above on transitioning, especially if you just buy what is "on sale" or when you have a coupon for the local store.
